Hike through ridges to Mountain Hut Frey. The traverse of cerro Catedral. season offered: November, December April. difficulty / level of fitness: moderate description: begin with a morning ascent via cable car or chairlift from ski resort “cerro Catedral” with a vertical gain of 1000m (3,300 ft.). Thereafter, a hike through mountain trails and ridges will reveal spectacular views of lake “Nahuel Huapi” and lake “Gutierrez”, mount “Tronador” and many other mountains en valleys of great splendor. Within three hours of hiking through rocky terrain and few uphill sections, passing along the way lake “Schmoll”, arrive at Mountain Hut Frey 1700m (5600 ft.) situated along the edges of lake “Toncek”. The surroundings of “Frey” is a rock climbers paradise, a magnificent scene rich in granitic rock formations. The hike down to “Frey” requires coordination skills navigating through loose and rocky terrain. In the afternoon, descend back down to “Villa Catedral” via the regular route. This three hour hike takes one through a “lenga” forest of undescribable beauty, passing along the way Mountain Hut “Piedritas” and “Van Titter” stream. A HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TRAVERSE.
Ascent to cerro Bella Vista season offered: year round difficulty / level of fitness : moderate description: this 1700 m (5600 ft.) mountain, located between “cerro Catedral” and lake “Moreno”, is aptly named for its beautiful views. Cerro Bella Vista has a peak of easy access which combines a hike through mountain forest and a final section through a wide and colorful ridge. The steep nature of this hike requires a good level of fitness. An ascent of approximately 3 - 4 hours with a descent of 2 3 hours.
Hike to cerro Challhuaco season offered: year round difficulty / level of fitness: moderate description: travel to Mountain Hut “Neumeyer” by 4 wheel drive vehicles 20 km south of the city of Bariloche. The hike begins in a fantastic “lenga” forest, which, towards the end of January, blooms countless beautiful flowers of “amancay”. At approximately 1600 m ( 5300 ft.) we leave the forest and enter a semi-desertic zone typical of this altitude. Upon reaching Challhuaco´s peak the views are imposing. 360º of panorama which includes “cerro Blanco”, “cerro Ñireco”, the Patagonian Steppes to the East , the “Ñirihuau” river, and “Tristeza” stream. On the hike down from Challhuaco´s peak there is the option to trek by lake “Verde” (green) surrounded by a forest of ancient trees. Before returning to the city of Bariloche we will stop for tea at Mountain Hut Neumeyer. All this combined make this a very complete excursion.
Ascent to cerro Lopez season offered: December April difficulty / level of fitness: moderate / hard description: this hike begins early from “Circuito Chico” and ascends to Mountain Hut Lopez via the regular trail. Depending on conditions , the hike continues upward to “Turista” peak, passing along the way the well known “Hoya del Lopez”. This ascent requires coordination skills navigating through loose and rocky terrain on a steep grade. The rewards are great, exhilarating views of “Monte Tronador” (11500 ft.), lake “Nahuel Huapi”, lake “Moreno”, the grandiose Hotel “Llao Llao”, and the impression of being able to touch the sky. A highly recommended experience. note: because of the steep nature of this trail, a certain level of fitness and hiking experience is recommended. For those wishing to bypass most of this rigorous trail it is possible to ascend by 4x4 on a mountain road as an alternate. This would be an additional cost and would considerably shorten the approach to the peak.
Ascent to North Peak of cerro Lopez from Lopez Bay. season offered: November April difficulty / level of fitness: hard description: this hike requires some scrambling and ascent on very steep trails. It begins from lake Nahuel Huapi level (760 m / 2500 ft) and goes to 2050 m / 6700 ft. A hike which requires a good level of fitness and an ability to move over rocky terrain. Begin from “Bahia Lopez”, after 20 minutes of hiking on a wide trail the hike ascends the steep and rocky Northwest spur of “cerro Lopez”. All the meanwhile marvolous views abound. The characteristics of this ascent require continuous scrambling over rocky terrain on a long day outside.
Ascent to “cerro Ventana” season offered: year round difficulty / level of fitness: moderate description: a few kilometers south of Bariloche rises this beautiful mountain with curious rock formations and impressive views. The hike up is rigorous and sustained and therefore one must be prepared for a physical challenge. From the beginning to the upper ridges the panorama is beautiful: lake “Gutierrez” at our feet, “cerro Catedral” and “cerro Otto”, the city of Bariloche , lake “Nahuel Huapi” and Mount Tronador, the highest mountain of the area.
